Is Your Property Eligible for an ADU or Garage Conversion in Long Beach, CA?
In Long Beach, most single-family and multi-family properties are eligible for an ADU or garage conversion. California has more relaxed zoning laws. There is no minimum or maximum lot size requirement. Detached ADUs can be up to 1,200 sq ft, while attached units are limited to 50% of the existing home’s size (max 1,200 sq ft).
Junior ADUs (JADUs) are capped at 500 sq ft. Setbacks for new detached ADUs are just 4 feet from rear and side property lines. Parking is not required if your property is within half a mile of public transit, located in a historic district, or if you’re converting an existing structure like a garage.
Long Beach allows one ADU and one JADU on single-family lots. Multi-family lots can add up to two detached ADUs and convert unused interior spaces into more units (up to 25% of the unit count). Owner occupancy is not required unless building a JADU. Long Beach has a streamlined ADU permit application process. You'll get an approval within 60 days.
